About the MEL
The Medical Equipment Library holds a large stock of medical equipment for loan to the wards and departments on site. Devices that are stocked include:
- Dynamic mattresses
- Volumetric infusion pumps
- Syringe pumps
- Ambulatory syringe pumps
plus a small number of additional items.
It also manages maintenance contracts for some ward equipment, such as beds, trolleys, hoists, weighing scales and static foam mattresses.
The MEL helps the hospital to meet national requirements to ensure that:
- Appropriate equipment is available for use when and where required
- Users know how to use the equipment, not only by providing standardised equipment, but also by provision of training by a fully qualified specialist nurse
- Equipment is decontaminated in addition to basic cleaning that wards carry out
- Equipment maintenance and repairs are carried out in a timely way
