Community Maternity Care

Our community team consists of Midwives and Maternity Support Workers (MSWs) trained in postnatal care and infant feeding support.

There is a dedicated team of community midwifes and a number of midwives that work both in the Bath Birthing Centre and in the community. This enables us to facilitate continuity of care as much as possible. All our midwives are committed to giving you the best postnatal care and support.

To ensure you and your baby are doing well we will carry out physical and emotional checks regularly. These appointments will be at your home, in your local birthing centre, in a GP surgery or a community unit.

We will check:

  • Your observations - blood pressure, respiration rate, pulse and temperature
  • Ask how your chosen method of feeding your baby is going and offer support
  • Advice about newborn screening
  • Weigh your baby when appropriate
  • Check how you are healing from the type of birth you had
  • Ask about your family/friend support and mental health
  • Signpost you to services that will support you, or you may find useful in the postnatal period
  • Answer any question you may have

You can contact us 24 hours a day 7 days a week for advice; if required you will be invited into your nearest open Birthing Centre.
