Norovirus: The Vomiting Bug

Norovirus is currently circulating in our community

Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. It's sometimes called the winter vomiting bug, but you can catch it at any time of year.

Symptoms usually start suddenly and last for around 2-3 days. As well as being or feeling sick and diarrhoea symptoms might include a high temperature, headache, tummy pain, or body aches and pains.

Most people can safely recover at home.

While you are unwell:

  • Do not visit hospitals or care settings for at least 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped
  • Get in touch with our Family Liaison Facilitators if you would like help in contacting someone in hospital
  • Get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids, like water or squash
  • Visit the NHS website for more self-care hints to help you get better at home, and advice on when to seek medical help: Norovirus (vomiting bug) - NHS

You can also help stop the spread by washing your hands regularly using soap and water (not all alcohol gels kill norovirus).

Thank you for helping us to protect our patients and community.
