PrEP
At The Riverside Clinic we provide assessment for and prescribing of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). This is a medication which can be taken to protect someone from HIV. When taken correctly, it is extremely effective.
The basics for PrEP appointments:
- Assessment of risk factors to check it is appropriate for you.
- Education around how to take it correctly.
- Regular sexual health testing every 3 months.
- Medication to be taken every day (Daily) or just before and after a sex (Event Based/ on Demand)
PEP
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis following Sexual Exposure (also known as PEP or PEPSE) is a month-long course of HIV drugs taken after sex. PEP medication is different to PrEP.
This medication tries to prevent you getting HIV after a recent risk. You need to start PEP within 72 hours (3 days), ideally within 24 hours. You can get PEP from us at The Riverside Clinic or local A&E department so you can still access it at weekends and bank holidays.
Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (Doxy-PEP)
At The Riverside Clinic we provide assessment for and prescribing of Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (Doxy-PEP) This is a medication which can be taken to prevent syphilis and chlamydia, reducing risks by up to 80%.
