Consent

It is important that you understand what the surgeon is going to do to you.

The doctor must make sure that you understand; if you have any questions you must ask them until you have a full understanding. This might mean the doctor drawing a picture or diagram to help you understand.

The law on consent

See the Department of Health’s Reference Guide to Consent for Examination or Treatment for a comprehensive summary of the law on consent.

On the consent form it will state that any procedure in addition to those described on this form will only be carried out if it is necessary to save my life or to prevent serious harm to my health. However it is rare that the surgeons decide to proceed and will usually only carry out what you have consented for.

If you have concerns then please feel free to discuss them with one of your doctors or nurses.
