Gynaecology: HICO

The Royal United Hospital Gynaecological Cancer Centre is an accredited specialist cancer service offering a wide range of treatments to patients with gynaecological cancer. We have a team of leading clinicians with significant expertise in the management of gynaecological cancers. We offer a range of highly specialist surgical treatments including laparoscopic cancer surgery, and extensive radical techniques for advanced and recurrent cancer. We also offer specialist chemotherapy and radiotherapy services.

Holistic care and support is provided by our Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) and their job is to 'look after patients throughout their time under our care. This means patients always know who to contact when they or their family have questions about their care.'

Holistic Integrated Care in Ovarian Cancer (HICO) Service

We’re working with University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust to pilot a new service for older patients who have been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, so we can further improve the care they receive.

Background – why we are piloting a new service

Between 2016 and 2029, the number of people aged over 75 in the local population is projected to increase by 36%. Ovarian cancer predominantly affects older patients, with around half of all new diagnoses occurring in those aged 65 and over.

Research across the NHS shows that older patients with ovarian cancer receive less intensive treatment and are more likely to have other medical problems that can mean they might not receive the same level of treatment as young patients relative under-treatment. To improve this we are providing holistic care, focusing on the physical and psychological well-being of older patients who are newly-diagnosed for ovarian cancer.
