About our services
We run a daily TIA clinic at the RUH. We now operate a 7-day service for TIA, although only high-risk patients are seen at the weekend and on bank holidays (see below*).
We aim to see new referrals within 24 hours of receipt of a referral, up to 7 days from the onset of symptoms.

Before your appointment
If you been referred to TIA clinic, you will be assessed by a specialist who will consider the cause of your symptoms and, if you have had a TIA, will discuss interventions to prevent further any future TIA or strokes.
You may have a telephone consultation or be asked to attend clinic, or both.
Expect to be called 24-48 hours after your referral, Monday to Friday.
If you have not heard from us within 3 working days, please ring the TIA clinic co-ordinator on 01225 821186.
Please note:
- Do not drive until you speak to the specialist
- If you have further symptoms, do not wait for your TIA appointment, but attend the Emergency Department instead
At your appointment
If you have any special needs, learning difficulties or Autism, please let us know and we will try to accommodate to your requests.
When you attend the B9 department, you will be guided to your appointments for scans, if required, and you will see the specialists after these. You will be given a TIA leaflet if you haven’t been given one already.
Be prepared to wait several hours as you may have investigations and see a doctor with the results the same day.
You may not necessarily have a scan of the head.
Please do tell us if you have a permanent pacemaker (PPM) or metal in your body, or if you are claustrophobic or worried about confined spaces, as this may affect your suitability for an MRI scan.
- Wear comfortable clothes and with easy access to ankles, wrists and chest (in case you need to have an ECG)
- Please bring list of medications
- Bring a witness of the events if you can
- Be prepared to wait several hours as you will have investigations and see a doctors with the results the same day
*Weekend or bank holiday appointment
If you have been given a weekend or bank holiday appointment, you will need to come to the Acute Stroke Unit [B6] on the ground floor.
