About the service

An allergy occurs when your immune system, which normally fights infection, overreacts to a substance called an allergen. Most allergens are normally harmless and do not affect people who are not allergic to them. Allergic reactions can vary from mild to life-threatening.

Sometimes it is difficult to know what is causing allergic reactions and for some people allergic reactions can occur with no obvious cause. Sometimes people with allergies are referred to as being 'atopic'. This just means they are genetically likely to develop some kind of allergic illness. People with allergies can have one specific condition such as eczema, or allergic rhinitis (hay fever), or can be complex with multiple food allergies, asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis.

Here at the RUH in Bath, we are a growing team who are passionate about allergy and supporting our patients to learn to manage their allergies as they grow and mature from 0-18 years of age.

What we offer

We run paediatric consultant, nurse-led and dietitian supported allergy clinics, supporting children and families across a wide area of BANES, Wiltshire, and Somerset.

We provide telephone and face to face clinics, in a friendly environment in the children's outpatients department, in Bath. All referrals will be looked at by clinical members of the allergy team, who decide the most suitable type of appointment for your child or young person, and while waiting to be seen, you will have access to further information to help you to manage their condition.

We offer a comprehensive service for children and young people, 0-18 years, supporting them with the following conditions:

• Food allergy
• Anaphylaxis
• Urticaria & Angioedema
• Severe environmental/seasonal allergy
• Asthma linked with other allergies
• Eczema where allergy is a major factor
• Paediatric immunotherapy for severe seasonal allergy (hay fever)
• Nominated clinic for Allergy assessment for joining the Armed Forces

• Support with managing allergy in schools and colleges
• Nutritional advice
• Support and training concerning any allergy medications including Adrenaline Auto-Injectors
• Referral to other members of the paediatric team for specialist support
• Teaching other healthcare professionals about allergy
• Ongoing localised care following treatment at a specialist centre
