NHS Direct opened in March 1998 and offers fast and free 24-hour advice about personal health care.
NHS Direct nurses aim to provide callers with the advice and reassurance they need to care for themselves at home – or, if they need further help, to direct them quickly to the right service at the right time.
If a condition is more serious, and in the case of emergencies, nurses can give quick advice on what action the caller should take and if appropriate will call an ambulance.
