Adult surgical patients

Surgical Admissions Unit (SAU) is a 19-bedded admissions unit, for emergency surgical admissions.

We operate a direct admission pathway to the SAU. This pathway is for GP referred surgical adult patients only. The decision to admit a patient directly to the SAU will be made by the person carrying the on call mobile phone. Direct Admission avoids patients waiting in the Emergency Department. Patients should present to the Surgical Admissions Unit located in department D1, ground floor, Zone D.

There is a waiting room and examination room on SAU. On arrival patients are clerked and examined by the Emergency Surgical Nurse Practitioner, F1, F2 or Registrar and reviewed by the on call consultant.

SAU patients have priority for AXR and CXR and for blood tests.
