What to expect

Attending the clinic

Men will be asked not to pass urine for at least an hour before attending the clinic.

When you arrive at the clinic you will be asked to fill out a form asking for name, date of birth and contact details. All of this information is kept confidential. The clinic has a separate computer system to the hospital and no details are passed on without your permission.

Samples are only labelled with a specific clinic ID number that is allocated to you and your date of birth. It will then take 5-10 minutes for our receptionists to input your details and create a folder. You will then be seen by a Doctor, Nurse or Health Adviser who will ask you personal questions so they can decide which tests you need.

If you do not have any specific symptoms or problems you can do your own vaginal swab if you are female or provide a urine sample if you are male. A blood test will also be offered to you. An examination is not usually necessary.

If you have any lumps, bumps, sore areas, problems passing urine or anything else that is not usual for you an examination will be offered and appropriate tests taken.

Results

With some tests you can get results and treatment, if you need it, on the same day. For others you will have to wait two weeks for results. We will contact you if there is anything to discuss including positive results, meaning your test results show you have an infection.

If you have given permission we will routinely text if all your results are negative. The message will state "all ok with recent tests - TRC".

You can also phone us for results but please wait three weeks from the time you attended, and phone between 09:00 and 12:00.
