What we do

The Healthcare Play Specialist provides every day play and specialist play preparation for children in both the Children's Ward and Outpatient clinics. Play preparation and hospital play is a way to help children and young people with their hospital treatment/admission.

Using specially designed materials and resources, qualified staff prepare patients before going to theatre or undergoing procedures such as MRI scans, X rays and blood tests. This helps children and young people feel supported through their procedures.

The Play Team is able to support children and young people during procedures using a variety of play resources and techniques tailoring this to each individual.

Post-procedural sessions allow patients time to play and talk about their hospital experience. It provides the opportunity for misconceptions to be corrected, with the support of the Healthcare Play Specialists.

The activities program runs on a daily basis across the hospital and includes:

  • PAT Dogs
  • Artists in Residence
  • Giggle Doctors
