Information for new starters with a disability

Do you have a disability?

RUH Bath NHS Foundation Trust is committed to creating an inclusive workplace where all our colleagues feel they can be themselves, thrive in their roles and grow their careers. This includes colleagues who have a disability.

By disabled we mean anyone who has a physical or mental impairment or condition that is long lasting, (more than 12 months) and has a substantial impact on their day-to-day activities. This includes sensory impairments, physical impairments, learning difficulties, neuro-diverse conditions like autism, mental health and long term physical health conditions.

We understand that some colleagues will need adjustments to help them perform to the best of their ability – these can be changes to the built environment and furniture, the tools and technology they use in doing their job, aspects of the role or working arrangements.

Now you are joining us, we would like to ask you:

  • Is there anything we can do to help minimise the impact of your impairment or condition and help you be the best you can be in your new job?
  • Is there anything that your manager would benefit in knowing about your impairment or condition in advance of you joining?
  • Is there anything that you would like your new team to know about your impairment or condition so that they are prepared for when you join?
  • Would you like a conversation with our in-house Equality and Diversity Officer to chat through your situation and how we can help?
  • We run a disability staff network for employees. If you'd like more information, please get in contact with us.

You can contact Gayle Williams, Equality and Diversity Officer on

If you do need any adjustments, the sooner we know the better chance we have of getting things sorted for you before you join so you can hit the ground running on day one.

However, we understand that you might have concerns about sharing information about an impairment or condition because of what people might think or how it might affect your career. If that's you, remember that the RUH champions difference and inclusion.

So be yourself, be confident and be open about having a disability.
