Fracture clinic casts a spell: Halloween display marks National Casting Day
Staff at the Royal United Hospitals (RUH) Bath NHS Foundation Trust have conjured up a frightfully fun Halloween display to celebrate National Casting Day on 6 November.
National Casting Day is an annual initiative that shines a spotlight on the incredible skills and services provided by those who work in fracture clinics and cast rooms.
The RUH Fracture and Orthopaedic Clinic provides expert care for patients with orthopaedic conditions, soft tissue injuries, and broken bones. The team includes physiotherapist and orthopaedic practitioners who treat patients of all ages – from planned surgeries to emergency cases.
This year, teams across the country were invited to take part in a Halloween-themed 'Cast Off' competition, and the RUH fracture clinic rose to the challenge winning the competition with their spooky graveyard display made from plaster.
Claire Hall, Orthopaedic Practitioner, said: "We wanted to do something that was creative and fun, but also to raise awareness of the vital work we do behind the scenes. Casting isn't just about plaster – it's about helping people get back on their feet after injury or surgery. This competition gave us the perfect chance to showcase our skills and teamwork."
Claire added: "No two days are ever the same in the plaster room. One moment we're helping a child with a broken arm, the next we're supporting someone recovering from major surgery.
Every cast is tailored to the patient using materials like plaster of Paris and other light weight synthetic materials – it's a hands-on job that makes a real difference."
