You are automatically enrolled into the NHS Pension scheme or NEST and are automatically re-enrolled every 3 years even if you have opted out.

NHS Pension

From April 2015 the NHS Pension scheme is a Career Average Revalued Earnings scheme (CARE)

  • You earn 1/54th of your pensionable pay as pension each year you work
  • This is then revalued with consumer price index and 1.5% from the Pensions Agency
  • You can take this pension at Normal Pension Age (State Pension Age) which is around 67 for most of us
  • Your contribution rates are set nationally and are tax free. The Employer contribution rates are also set nationally

NEST

If you work full time elsewhere and are already contributing towards an NHS Pension, then you will be enrolled into the Government National Employment Saving Fund (NEST) scheme. As an employee you pay 4.0% on your qualifying earnings, the employer contributes 3% on your qualifying earnings.
