Obstetric Anaesthesia

The Obstetric unit at the Royal United Hospital Bath cares for around 4,500 deliveries per year across our birthing centres and the acute area (Bath Birthing Centre). Our consultant-led obstetric anaesthetic service provides 24-hour cover for the busy delivery suite 7 days per week.

Our obstetric anaesthetists form an integral part to the broader maternity team offering advice regarding labour analgesia, a 24-hour epidural service, anaesthetic provision for any operative intervention and care of the higher risk pregnancy and mother.

We also provide two Consultant-led anaesthetic antenatal clinics per month to plan the care for mothers with more complex pregnancies with close liaison with other maternity services. There is a lead clinician for obstetric anaesthesia who constantly reviews the provision of obstetric anaesthetic services to ensure that we provide the safest, evidence based, quality care for all of our mothers.

Obstetric Anaesthesia Research

We are actively involved in numerous research projects aimed at improving the care for our mothers. Supported by a fantastic maternity research team, we participate in numerous large national trials each year. We are proud of our involvement in this research and the contribution it provides to shaping the best care for all of our patients. More details regarding these trials can be found on the Maternity Website or by contacting our Maternity Research Team.
