Palliative Care

RUH Specialist Team

We are a support and advisory service working with the staff in the RUH, and in close contact with Dorothy House Hospice who provide support in the community.

We have an office on the ground floor of the RUH: Zone A, Department: A15 (Map to Department).

We also have a quiet room where we can see patients and their families away from the ward or clinic area if appropriate.

The team consists of:

  • A Palliative Care / End of Life Care Lead nurse: Helen Meehan
  • 3 Palliative Care Nurse Specialists:Caroline Groom, Rachel Davis and Annie Murray
  • 1 Palliative Care Physician who works at Dorothy House and RUH: Dr Simon Brooks
  • Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist from Dorothy House and working one day per week with the RUH team: Hanne Peer & Margaret Blagbrough

  • Team Coordinator: Linda Packer
Some of the services we aim to offer within the RUH are:
  • Advice and help with controlling physical symptoms when they are difficult to manage, such as pain, nausea, breathlessness, fatigue
  • Giving people time to talk about the effects of the illness on people and their family
  • Helping people to cope with the emotional, psychological and spiritual aspects of living with a life threatening illness
  • Advice and support to help people to plan for the future, e.g. adjusting to life changes, how and where care can be provided
