Clinical Application
Calcitonin measurement is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, which can be part of Multiple Endocrine Adenopathy II. Measurement of calcitonin after a pentagastrin stimulation test is used in screening patients with a family history of medullary carcinoma or who have other component disorders of the MEA type II complex.
