Clinical Application
IGF-2 is a peptide hormone mainly synthesised in the liver in adults, amongst other tissues. It is co-secreted with insulin and is responsible for regulating cell growth, differentiation, proliferation, migration and survival. It is particularly important during fetal development and growth, but may also be raised in a number of different cancers.

Measurement of IGF-2 may be useful in the differentiation of spontaneous hypoglycaemia. It may also be useful in determining a source of hypoglycaemia in non-islet cell tumours in cases of severe hypoglycaemia. This is alongside the measurement of IGF-1, insulin, C-peptide, ketones and growth hormone.
