Clinical Application
Investigation of suspected acute pancreatitis. A significantly raised lipase (>3 x ULN), if consistent with clinical signs, supports a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. Other causes should be considered if lipase is moderately raised (2-3 x ULN) e.g. GI or liver disease, acute cholecystitis, acute kidney injury, renal colic, pyelonephritis and malignancy. However, a normal or moderately raised serum lipase does not completely exclude acute pancreatitis and if clinical signs are consistent, further investigations e.g. appropriate imaging may still be warranted.
