Clinical Application
First-line screening test for thyroid disease. Further tests (fT3, fT4 ) will be added by the laboratory if indicated. Measurement of TSH as part of TRH test is also performed by endocrinologists, but this test is now rarely indicated (except for TSH -secreting tumour and thyroxine resistance syndromes).
Test limitations: On rare occasions, this immunoassay may be subject to interference e.g. due to patient-specific endogenous anti-reagent antibodies. Please contact the duty biochemist if you wish to discuss any results that do not appear to be consistent with the clinical picture (01225 824 715/713/711).
