Tilt Table Test

Patients with possible vasovagal syncope/pre-syncope

Who not

Patients with syncope and:

  • Severe aortic stenosis
  • Severe HOCM
  • Critical mitral stenosis
  • Critical proximal coronary artery disease

The test is supervised by Sister Claire Monahan or Cardiac Centre Nursing staff.

It involves lying with feet resting against a footplate on a table which is then tilted up through 60°. This position is held for about 45 minutes, or until typical symptoms develop. The table is designed such that there is no danger of falling.

Blood pressure and ECG are continuously monitored. Carotid sinus massage is done by a clinician if required.

By arrangement

Patients who would benefit are identified by a Cardiologist.
Appointments are sent by post by Sister Claire Monahan.
