Opening Times

Plain Film – GP referrals

All plain x-ray examinations are performed through an open access service where patients referred by their GP can arrive at a time convenient to them between 8.15am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays), without an appointment.

Plain Film – Emergency Department

A 24 hour 7 day a week Radiology service is provided for the Emergency Department for all accident and emergency patients.


All fluoroscopy procedures are booked via appointment only. There are two fluoroscopic imaging rooms able to undertake these examinations.


The Radiology department has two 64-slice state of the art CT scanners which operate from 8am to 8pm Monday – Thursday, until 5pm on Friday and until 1pm at weekends.

There are two 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners which also operate from 8am to 8pm Monday – Thursday, until 5pm on Friday and until 4pm at weekends. In addition to this, we have a visiting mobile MRI van approximately twice a week to enable us to provide adequate MRI capacity.

All outpatient appointments for CT & MRI are appointment only but we are able to provide a wide range of appointment times, including evenings and weekends to suit all patients.


There are two Ultrasound departments located within the Royal United Hospital, Bath. The General Ultrasound department is situated within the main Radiology Department and a second site within the Princess Anne Wing of the hospital. Both are open from 9am-5pm on weekdays (excluding Bank Holidays), on an appointment only basis. Over the two sites there are a total of six Ultrasound rooms able to perform a wide range of examinations including: abdominal, pelvic, small part, vascular, paediatric, musculoskeletal and gynaecological Ultrasound.

Ultrasound performed on the Princess Anne Wing site is predominantly Obstetric and Gynaecological.
