Attending the clinic

All women who wish to attend the early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic (EPAC) must telephone in advance. This clinic is no longer a walk-in service, you will be turned away.

Please call 01225 825803 and leave the details of your name, date of birth and contact telephone number. A member of the EPAC team will return your call - this will appear on your phone as 'caller unknown'.

About the clinic

The Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic (EPAC) is a specialist assessment and scanning service for pregnant women up to 14 weeks gestation who have experienced pain and/or vaginal bleeding.

If you are more than 14 weeks pregnant you will need to contact your GP or midwife, who may refer you to the gynaecology emergency assessment clinic (GEAC)

To attend EPAC you must have a positive pregnancy test and pain or bleeding.

Most pregnancies are healthy despite bleeding but some women find that their bleeding is due to a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. This is frequently a devastating and upsetting diagnosis. Please consider bringing someone with you to this clinic. Some women, but not all, need emotional support from a partner, mother, or friend.

It is important that you are aware that this clinic can be are unpredictably busy and you may be in the clinic for at least 4 hours.

We are very aware that it may be enormously frustrating for you if you have to wait and we will try to keep you informed of wait times during the morning.

What will happen when you are in the clinic

You will be required to provide a urine specimen, so we can do a pregnancy test, and complete a patient questionnaire, about your health and why you have attended the clinic today. You will then be initially assessed by the early pregnancy team who will book you for an ultrasound scan, if required.

Not every women needs to have an ultrasound scan. Occasionally we ask women to return at a later date for an ultrasound scan. Scan appointments are allocated according to clinical priority not the time that you arrived in the clinic. The majority of ultrasound scans with be vaginal (internal).

After you have had your scan you will be seem by a member of the early pregnancy team who may need to take some blood tests and examine you. They will explain your results and plan your ongoing pregnancy care. You will be given a copy of an outcome letter and your scan report; these will also be sent to your GP.

Location

The Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic is situated in Gynaecology Outpatients on ground floor of Zone D. The waiting area is at the end of the Gynaecology Outpatients corridor accessed by following the blue line from reception.
