About Us

The United Colposcopy Service sees all patients referred with abnormal cervical smear results that require colposcopy and suspicion of cervical cancer. It offers a select and treat policy. High grade smears are usually offered treatment at first visit whereas low grades are biopsied and, dependant on the results, kept under surveillance or treated at a later date.

Information on what to expect at the appointment is sent to the patient with an appointment letter together with contact numbers. Information is also given to patients after their visit. Results are usually communicated to the referring practitioner and patient by letter within approx 4-5 weeks.

Occasionally treatment is complicated by bleeding. A letter is given to the patient explaining the use of antibiotics. She is advised to contact the GP with the letter should she have a problem. Occasionally packing, suturing may be required in which case the duty registrar for gynaecology should be contacted by ringing the switchboard at the RUH.

For contact details see the Contact Us page.
