About the Department

Community clinic service

The community clinic service is based in the children's centre. We offer an outpatient assessment and advice service for pre-school children registered with a BaNES GP, and for school-aged children attending a school in the BaNES area. The community clinic therapists also provide individual and pre-school group speech and language therapy sessions.

Other community clinics are based at St. Martins Hospital, Paulton Hospital and Keynsham Health Centre. The community clinic also offers a telephone advice line for parents and professionals, and a drop-in advice clinic for parents.

Specialist speech and language therapy teams

The specialist therapy team offers assessment, advice, management and intervention for children with complex and special needs. The specialist therapists cover inpatients and outpatients and children attending the RUH school and Pre-school assessment and therapy (PAT) centre.

Other paediatric speech and language therapy services (for example, school-based and community outreach services) are run from St. Martins Hospital.

Appointments & Reception

The paediatric speech and language therapy service operates an open-referral system, and accepts referrals from parents, teachers, health visitors, GPs and other professionals. To refer a child to the service, please contact speech and language therapy administrator Tamzin Fraser on (01225) 831708

Appointments for assessments at the RUH are sent out directly to parents by post following referral. Because of patient confidentiality, we do not routinely advise other agencies (for example, schools) of appointment times. At the current time, a first appointment is offered around 12 weeks following receipt of a referral, and we are working towards reducing this waiting time. We try to give parents 2-4 weeks' notice of appointments.

If you are unable to attend the offered appointment, you need to contact the department to request a re-appointment. The next available assessment appointment will be sent to you by post. If you do not attend your appointment, and you do not contact the department to cancel the appointment, your child may be discharged from the service.
