Help and support for those affected by Urological Cancers

Macmillan Uro-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) are available to help those diagnosed with a urological cancer understand their disease and treatment options by offering advice, information and emotional support to patients and carers at various stages of their pathway.

The Uro-oncology nursing team at the RUH, are supported by Macmillan Cancer Support and are hospital based, located within the Cheselden Urology Unit, Department D11. We aim to provide high quality care to those who are suspected of, or diagnosed with a urological cancer.

Several nurse led services have been developed including:

  • Prostate Biopsy Results Clinic
  • Radical prostatectomy follow up
  • Brachytherapy follow up
  • Remote follow up of stable prostate cancer (PSA Tracker)
  • Superficial bladder cancer clinic

In addition, the CNS is present at the one stop clinic for haematuria and prostate biopsies, to offer support for those with suspected cancers and offers a drop-in service for those wishing to discuss their condition further once a diagnosis has been made. Patients are given the contact details for the CNS, written information relating to their condition and advice on where to go for further support.

The Uro-oncology CNS is part of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), working closely with Consultant Urologists and Oncologists, and acts as the patients key worker in ensuring the smooth co-ordination of care, liaising with other departments and hospitals when necessary.

We believe that good communication is essential between all parties as this helps to relieve anxiety and reduce fear and assists in preparation for further appointments enabling appropriate treatment decisions. We are not palliative care nurses, but will refer on if necessary.

Referrals to the service are made directly to the CNS and can be from other Health Care Professionals or patients and carers.
