Clinical Application
Increased in jaundice. Measurement of direct bilirubin to differentiate cause is sometimes useful, especially in paediatric use. Isolated hyperbilirubinaemia in adults probably due to Gilbert's syndrome - measure direct (<25% of total), reticulocytes (normal) and haptoglobin (normal) to differentiate from haemolytic disease.
