Our Team

Our specialist team is led by Dr Colin Payton, consultant occupational physician and Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine. He is supported by Dr Fiona Bigwood.

Our team of occupational nurses and advisors consists of registered nurses with either a diploma in occupational health nursing and/or several years experience working in occupational health. They have worked with a wide variety of cases and administered a varied range of interventions.

We are supported by a dedicated administration team and an IT administrator. Pauline Bertrand is the business manager. Pauline has a BSc(Hons) in Economics and recently completed the strategic development programme for NHS Plus occupational health business managers.

Lead Clinician and Head of the Department

A consultant occupational physician, fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, Dr Payton provides a full range of occupational physician services concentrating on the more complex cases, mental health conditions, alcohol and substance misuse. He is a member of the executive committee of the Medical Council for Alcohol.

Dr Payton has developed and expanded the occupational health service and established an Employee Assistance Programme to provide counselling, advice and support and also instigated the intensive support programme for alcohol and substance misuse. He is responsible for staff wellbeing initiatives, starting the on-site Oasis health club; the cycle to work scheme; the smoking cessation campaign, establishing a smoke free hospital, leading the RUH Bath half marathon teams for several years and spearheading stress awareness and other initiatives.

Dr Fiona Bigwood, MBChB DipOccMed

Occupational Physician

Dr Bigwood holds the Diploma in Occupational Medicine, and is qualified in Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) assessment. She has extensive experience in occupational medicine.


Trust Doctor in Occupational Medicine

Dr Dawson is currently working as a locum doctor in Occupational Medicine and also works in Bristol as a GP.
