Overview

Community Child Health (BANES PCT) and the department work closely together. Acute services include admissions for acutely ill children, Mon to Fri ward assessment at the request of GP's and a 'within 1 week' urgent outpatient service. We work closely with tertiary services, predominantly in Bristol. A number of specialist clinics are held in Bath, We provide general paediatric clinics throughout the Bath clinical area.

The Community Child Health service includes immunisation and public health programmes, long term care of children with neurodisability, child protection clincs, investigation and management of children with autistic spectrum disorders and attention disorders. The Children's Audiology services are located in the children's centre and managed by the Community Child Health team.

There are 5000 deliveries in the Bath clinical area and we have a busy Neonatal Intensive Care Unit., with approximately 500 admissions annually. The Neonatal Department provides services for normal newborns and has dedicated follow up clinics for high risk children.

The department is part of the Bath Clinical Academy and has an active undergraduate and post graduate teaching programme. The childrens centre opened in 2001: it is a purpose built centre with 38 inpatient beds for children up to the age of 16 (and 18 for those in full time education). There is an adjacent children's outpatients where children are seen in clinic but also for day case investigation and phlebotomy. We also have a very well equipped Patient assessment Centre (PAT Centre) where the children's physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapists are based.
