Project Overview

GPs will be encouraged to refer through the advice and guidance portal on NHS e-Referral Service (as the rule), rather than referring a patient in the traditional manner for an outpatient consultation. The triaging Consultant will make the decision as to whether a face-to-face consultation would be more appropriate and make the necessary arrangements.

Referrals from non GP sources will be excluded from the advice and guidance pilot.

Key Objectives

  1. To reduce unnecessary outpatient appointments through implementation of a pilot to provide consultant treatment plans in place of face-to-face Outpatient appointments to GP referrals.
  2. A limited level of consultant treatment plans are already provided to GPs on an informal basis. This would formalise the process and the information provided to include treatment plans and advice on treatment or investigations instead of OPD appointments.
  3. Paediatricians will triage all non-urgent referrals and may decide that a consultant treatment plan is more appropriate than an OPD appointment for some referrals, on the basis of information given.
